From Fast Fashion’s Graveyard to a Circular Tomorrow: A Fast Fashion PM’s Wake-Up Call
From a young age, fashion was more than just clothing for me. It was self-expression in a language beyond words. Harmonizing fabrics and patterns to curate the perfect outfit felt like solving a beautiful, intricate puzzle. This creative impulse showed up early, from designing my own dance costumes as a competitive athlete, to styling myself daily. Fashion was art. It was an identity.
But that passion often clashed with my rapidly shifting tastes. The thrill of a new purchase faded quickly. Garments I had adored just weeks before began to feel stale, almost disposable. This tension, between my love for style and the pull of fleeting trends, naturally drew me to fast fashion. It offered constant novelty and accessibility, and I welcomed both.
For a couple of years, I worked as a Digital Product Director at a fast-growing fashion tech startup, and I thrived on the adrenaline of speed and scale. Helping deliver the latest styles to millions of consumers, I was embedded in the cycle of trend-chasing (professionally and personally) and for a long time, I genuinely loved it.
But lately, a quiet discomfort has been growing louder. After watching Netflix’s “Buy Now”, I could no longer ignore the human and environmental toll of the clothes I helped launch. I found myself asking hard questions: Where do our garments actually end up? Why do we keep producing more, faster, cheaper? And most importantly, what is circular fashion, and why does it matter?
This series of articles is my journey to find those answers, and yours, if you’re ready to rethink how you engage with fashion. Together we’ll travel from the “graveyards” of our discarded clothes to the frontiers of circular design, practical wardrobe swaps, industry-wide reforms, and even AI-powered supply chains.
